And we’re hoping to mark the occasion in style.
Our title defence in 2008/2009 did not quite go as planned but with a sprinkling of new recruits and plenty of commitment from the old guard, the Eagles are primed to climb to the upper echelon of the GCA2 ladder.
Shane Skene enters his fourth year as club coach, having led an even line up to glory in 2007/2008 and continuing his good form with the bat in 2008/2009. Skeney’s leadership, along with that of a talented group of senior players, has propelled Waurn Ponds into a new era. This year’s challenge will be to make finals in all senior grades and put the rest of the competition on notice.
Formerly known as the University Cricket Club, the club changed its name in March 2006 to provide Waurn Ponds with its own sporting identity. The suburb is one of the fastest growing in Geelong and the committee and members felt it was time that the community had a team of its own. We still retain strong links with Deakin University and encourage all students, staff and past graduates to join one of the region’s most exciting clubs.
If you’re proud of where you’re from, take your cricket seriously or just feel like a bit of hit and giggle, then one of our five teams can cater for you.
The club also boasts some of Geelong’s best turf and synthetic playing and training facilities. Our home ground is known as Jarvis Oval (see map), which is based at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus (enter off Pigdons Road and turn into Nicol Drive South). Like most sporting fields, the effects of drought have hit hard but proposed works to drought-proof our facilities should restore Jarvis back to its pristine best. It still remains as one of Geelong’s most scenic grounds and with recent renovations to convert five turf wickets to couch, should once again rate among the city’s best cricket wickets.
Our 3rd XI and one-day teams play at Deakin’s Lakeside Oval and the Rugby Oval (see map). Both grounds have synthetic wickets and surfaces that provide maximum value for good shot making.
On the social front, Waurn Ponds has a hectic schedule and provides members, supporters and sponsors with terrific value in a vibrant atmosphere for partners, children and visitors. For more information, visit the Social Events section of this website for a complete and up to date list of activities.
Most importantly of all, the Waurn Ponds Cricket Club extends a warm welcome to anyone who is interested in contributing to any success that we may enjoy.
To those who have not experienced Waurn Ponds’ unique style, we encourage you to get on board!
GO EAGLES!
